Beyond Strengthening: Why Individualised Pelvic Floor Care Matters
By Kate Nunn

When people experience bladder leaks, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, urgency, or other pelvic floor symptoms, it's natural to look for a quick fix. New technologies, including pelvic floor stimulation chairs, are becoming increasingly popular, promising convenient treatment with little effort from the patient.
However, pelvic floor dysfunction is rarely a one-size-fits-all condition.
As an osteopath specialising in pelvic health, I offer a comprehensive 6-week programme designed around you, not just your symptoms.
Pelvic floor problems are not always caused by weakness
Many people assume the pelvic floor simply needs strengthening, but that's only part of the picture.
Pelvic floor symptoms may be associated with:
➡️ Stress incontinence
➡️ Pelvic organ prolapse
➡️ Overactive bladder
➡️ Pelvic pain
➡️ Pelvic floor weakness
➡️ Bowel dysfunction
➡️ Pelvic floor overactivity or excessive tightness
➡️ Poor breathing and pressure management
➡️ Movement and posture patterns
➡️ Scar tissue or previous birth trauma
➡️ Nervous system sensitivity
In some cases, strengthening alone may not be appropriate and can even aggravate symptoms if the muscles are already overactive or unable to relax effectively.
What makes my 6-week programme different?
Every patient receives:
✅ A pelvic health assessment
✅ An individualised diagnosis and explanation of their symptoms
✅ A tailored treatment plan
✅ Personalised pelvic floor rehabilitation
✅ Advice on breathing, posture, and pressure management
✅ Lifestyle and behavioural strategies where appropriate
✅ Progress reviews each week
✅ Hands-on osteopathic treatment where indicated
✅ Winback TECAR therapy to support tissue health, encourage neuromuscular function, and assist rehabilitation
The aim is not simply to stimulate muscles but to understand why symptoms are occurring and address the factors contributing to them.
How does this differ from a pelvic floor chair?
Pelvic floor chairs use electromagnetic stimulation to produce involuntary muscle contractions and may be helpful for some individuals as part of a wider treatment strategy.
However, they generally do not include:
📍 A detailed clinical assessment
📍 Identification of whether muscles are weak, tight, or poorly coordinated
📍 Individualised exercise prescription
📍 Education and behavioural strategies
📍 Ongoing reassessment and progression
📍 Hands-on clinical treatment
📍 A personalised management plan
Without understanding the underlying cause of symptoms, treatment may not address the factors that matter most for each individual.
The goal: better function, not just stronger muscles
Pelvic health is about coordination, timing, relaxation, and function—not simply strength.
By combining expert assessment, tailored rehabilitation, and Winback TECAR therapy within a structured 6-week programme, my goal is to help patients achieve meaningful, lasting improvements that fit their individual needs and lifestyle.
It's also important to recognise that there is rarely a "magic fix" when it comes to pelvic floor dysfunction. While many people notice significant improvements within six weeks, for others, this programme is the beginning of a longer journey. Factors such as the duration and severity of symptoms, previous surgeries, hormonal changes, chronic pain, childbirth, or underlying health conditions can all influence recovery.
My aim is not to promise unrealistic results, but to ensure you're on the right path with an accurate assessment, an evidence-informed treatment plan, and the knowledge and tools to continue making progress beyond those initial six weeks.
If you're experiencing bladder leaks, prolapse symptoms, bowel dysfunction, pelvic pain, or overactive bladder concerns, an individual assessment can help identify the right treatment approach for you.
If you're unsure whether the full 6-week programme is right for you, there's no need to commit straight away. You can simply book an initial pelvic health consultation, where we can talk through your symptoms, carry out a thorough assessment, and discuss the most appropriate treatment options for your individual needs. There will be time in the consultation to include the Winback treatment too, so that you can experience it first without committing to the course upfront.
